New to Terra Nova
Greetings Students and Parents,
You are all receiving this letter because you or your student is scheduled to join us at The Terra Nova School of Science and Sustainability this year. For those of you that are returning, welcome back, and for those of you that are new, WELCOME! We are looking forward to a year of learning, exploration, independence and community.
Students, we are pleased to tell you that you are now co-owners of a working farm. Your farm was built by our community of learners over the last 5 years, and we are so happy to have you join that community. Whether you are in our Chemistry or Field Biology course, you will plant, grow, and harvest fruits and vegetables this year and will learn how chemistry and biology are an integral part of all the food you eat each day.
For those of you that might not know a lot about Terra Nova we are a half day science program that is open to high school students across all of Beaverton’s comprehensive high schools. Our school is one of the most unique learning environments in the Portland Metro area as we operate a working farm, an industrial kitchen, and a woodshop/makerspace. Our students learn field biology or chemistry and all Oregon state standards for biology and chemistry are taught in a hands-on, project-based learning environment. Scientific inquiry and engineering design, as well as environmental science and sustainability practices are integrated into our courses. Students learn these subjects and standards through hands-on projects on our farm, in our classrooms, our laboratory, kitchen, and woodshop/makerspace.
Students, you can expect to be outside learning and working just about every day this year. Please know that we have boots and gloves for everyone and there is no need to purchase a single item before you join us at Terra Nova. But, it is important that you come to our school prepared and understand that you will be learning and working outside in the field and in a variety of other learning spaces.
Terra Nova's Back-to-School Night will be on Thursday, Sept 26th from 6:30 pm to 8pm. This event will be a great opportunity to tour the facility and meet the staff. We'll send out another reminder well in advance, but please save the date, and we hope you can all attend.
Our summer crew has been working all summer long and selling produce at the Cedar Mill Farmer’s Market. You can check out all their work as well as photos from last year on our Instagram page. Instagram:@terranovasustainability
We look forward to seeing you all this week.
